Vestigia - Latin for "traces.
The choice of this name has a programmatic character: the search for manuscripts and their indexing is a reading of traces, to which our research center is committed.
The VESTIGIA research center is dedicated to the scientific cataloguing of written cultural heritage, which is available in various forms: as manuscripts, incunabula and early prints, as documents, plans, maps, topographica, as autographs, bequests and other rare books.
The emphasis is on tacking stock of collections (inventory, cataloging, ...), on conservation (preservation and restoration), and on making it accessible (mainly through digitization and databases), as well as on scientific publications and the edition of selected objects.
VESTIGIA focuses on the collections at the University Library of Graz and regional holdings (e.g. in Styrian archives and monastery libraries), but it also contributes to making manuscript collections accessible to the scientific community, especially in the neighboring countries of Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
The Center's tasks also include an increased engagement with the digital humanities.
